Samsung announced its new Spinpoint F4 3.5-inch hard drive engineered for high-end computing in PCs, Macs, high-end workstations and server applications. The F4 uses SATA 3Gbps interface and comes with 8MB or 16MB buffer memory. It has 320GB capacity and features 7200RPM speed rotation.

Like other Samsung hard drives, the Spinpoint F4 includes SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies for ultra quiet operation.

Samsung’s bada, heard of it? Samsung sure hopes so as it’s betting heavily on the OS in its battle with Nokia to make cheap smartphones globally accessible. Today Samsung is introducing the Wave 2 (S5250) and Wave 2 Pro (S5330) QWERTY slider at CommunicAsia 2010. Sometimes, hackers hack without any constructive purpose — they do it just because they can. This, however, decidedly isn’t such a case; in fact, it’s one of the more enviable hackjobs we’ve seen in recent weeks. Basically, a dude split open his 3G iPad, removed the AT&T modem, and installed the circuit board out of a Verizon MiFi, providing power from the iPad’s battery and hooking in the borrowed AT&T antenna for hotspot range. The hack wasn’t without its trials and tribulations — the MiFi’s green LED initially shone through the back of the iPad’s display, for instance — but ultimately, the proud owner ended up with a fully functional iPad that doubles as a Verizon WiFi hotspot. It’s not exactly turnkey enough to recommend to lay folk, but at least Verizon customers can take heart knowing this kind of craziness is possible if you’ve got the stones for it.

We aren’t trying to lump these two together or anything, but we figured we’d give those of you who opted for Palm’s second set of webOS handsets an opportunity to pool your thoughts in order to make the smartphone landscape an even better place to survey. We personally didn’t find too much new to laud on Verizon’s Palm-branded twofer compared to the original Pre and Pixi, and those of you who were hoping for all new hardware from the company at CES were undoubtedly let down. Still, there’s something to be said about a webOS product on America’s “largest 3G network,” and frankly, we’re interested in hearing how you’d change things. The iPad will be launching on Saturday April 3rd (and on the shelves, er… display tables at Apple retail stores), but you’ll be able to plunk down cold, hard cash for it in just a week. Pre-orders will begin on March 12th for the US version (non-3G) for that April street date, with the 3G version coming in late April along with iPads for eager buyers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. Notice to all gadget makers and vendors: if you reduce your packaging and engage in environmentally conscious behavior, you’ll get free press out of it and positive brand awareness to boot. Take for example AT&T’s newly announced design specifications for its own-brand phone accessories and packaging requirements for cellphone makers. Both are geared toward minimizing the surplus of paper and plastic that tends to come with the purchase of your device, and both will require the use of recycled and recyclable materials. AT&T expects to save 200 tons of excess materials by the end of 2010, which is very encouraging, but also disturbing in that it lets us know we were wasting 200 tons each year that could, presumably, have been saved by some sager planning. Anyway, better late than never — and guess what, it will probably end up costing the company less than those inane advert attacks on Verizon.

It seems that in recent years, anything that Apple comes up with seems to generate a whole lot of publicity. We can’t really blame them for making good on their range of devices though, delivering quality as well as the most important of them all – a fantastic user experience which appeals to the broadest user base. Well, the iPad which was unveiled a couple of months ago certainly raised quite a furore amongst the general population, but there are also the fair share of detractors. Well, fans of the iPad will be pleased to know that the magical and revolutionary device is tipped to hit the US market on April 3rd, although this is limited to just its Wi-Fi models while others who want the high end Wi-Fi + 3G models will have to wait until the end of April. As for people living in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, they will be able to get their hands on the iPad in late April as well.

Too lazy to queue up at an Apple Store and fight with the crowd? You can always place your pre-order for both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple’s online store from March 12th onwards. With prices starting from $499 upwards, we do wonder whether the iPad will do well based on its merits alone and not because of all the hype generated over the past few months. To recap, the iPad is capable of letting users browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games and read ebooks among others. It measures all of 0.5″ thin which makes it a snap to slide it into a MacBook Air case without any trouble, while the 1.5 pounds weight makes it the thinnest and lightest device out there when compared to any netbook (of course, this is comparing apples and oranges – pun intended), since it can do many things the netbook already does.

It is important to remember than this is not very scientific.  Some stories are only one week old, while others are a month old, so the number of clicks is not going to be scaled proportionally.

Nokia presents its new C5, a candybar style smartphone from its newly introduced Cseries. The C5 features a 2.2-inch LCD display, a 3.2 Megapixel camera with LED flash, video recording and Full Focus EDOF (extended depth of field) technology, a secondary camera for video calls, Bluetooth and microSD card slot.

The Nokia C5 sports integrated A-GPS receiver and comes with Ovi Map 3.0 pre-installed for turn-by-turn navigation. This new smartphone runs S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 and comes with applications for messaging and social networking, such as Nokia Messaging for email and IM, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube. C5 has built-in music and video player and offers 3.5mm jack.

Nokia C5 supports dual band WCDMA 900/2100 and quad-band GSM/EDGE networks. It is available in White and Warm Grey and will be released in Q2 2010 globally in Europe, Eurasia, SEAP, China and MEA.

C5GLOBAL – This morning’s announcement of the Nokia C5 completes what some of you may have picked up on over the last few months – a shift in Nokia’s device naming convention. There are now four series of devices – Nokia Cseries, Xseries, Eseries and Nseries. Whilst the latter two have been around for a while, and Xseries has been around since last year’s Nokia World, the latest addition of Cseries rounds off the complete set. What’s more, within each series of devices, we’re seeing a new range of numbers, from 1 to 9, each signifying the range of functionality on offer, and the approximate prices of the devices – 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest.

Today’s announcement of the Nokia C5 joins its similarly named cousins of the Nokia X3 and Nokia X6, both of which were announced at Nokia World last year. As yet, we haven’t seen a similarly named E or N series device and of course, we won’t be commenting on when either of those might be happening.

This new naming convention is designed to make things easier for users, so they can quickly and easily work out where a device sits within the series and beyond that have a clearer idea of what each series does. Nseries remains the flagship and most advanced range of products. Xseries comes next and focuses on social entertainment. Eseries remains focussed on productivity and business whilst Cseries represents the core range of products.

Work on the new naming convention started way back in 2008, when extensive consumer research was done around the subject. The results of this research culminated in a new naming convention being created and first introduced late last year. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Frankly, it’s not at all easy finding the new goodies at ASUS’ CeBIT booth, but luckily we managed to catch word of this crazy spectacle of a router. Introducing, dear reader, the RT-N56U. It supports 802.11a/b/g/n, dual band support, 3G HSDPA USB dongles, printers and HDDs (via USB). Input methods include Two USB ports, four Gigabit LAN and one Gigabit WAN… no wait, this is impressive but inconsequential. It’s just really, really thin — and that’s all that matters here, right? It’s also quite reflective; just imagine trying to take a picture of a mirror behind a foggy window, and you’ll understand our pain with product photography today.
